After the Storm: Coming Home Safely
Most post-disaster injuries come from cleanup, chainsaws, generators and downed wires — not the storm itself.
This is for educational purposes only. Not professional medical, electrical, or safety advice.
Warning
Never connect a generator to house wiring without a transfer switch — it can electrocute utility workers.
- 01
Wait for the all-clear
Return only when officials allow. Watch for downed lines — assume every wire is live — and stay out of standing water near them.
- 02
Inspect before entering
Look for structural damage, gas smells and sagging ceilings. Photograph everything for insurance before cleaning.
- 03
Generator and CO safety
Run generators outdoors, 20+ feet from openings. Install a battery CO alarm. Headache, dizziness or nausea means get outside into fresh air now.
- 04
Clean up mold safely
Dry the house within 24–48 hours. Wear an N95, gloves and goggles; throw out soaked drywall, carpet and insulation.
- 05
Pace yourself
Work in pairs, drink water, take breaks. Exhaustion, heat and chainsaws cause many post-storm injuries.
