Find Water When the Taps Run Dry
Hidden water inside your home, plus springs, dew, transpiration bags and reading the land.
This is for educational purposes only. Not professional medical, electrical, or safety advice.
- 01
Inside your home first
Water heater tank (30–80 gal—turn off power/gas, open drain at bottom), toilet tank (not bowl), pipes (open the lowest faucet), ice cubes, canned food liquid.
- 02
Fill everything now
When an outage starts, fill bathtubs (use a WaterBOB liner), pots and jugs immediately while pressure lasts.
- 03
Read the land
Follow valleys downhill, green vegetation, insect swarms and animal trails at dawn/dusk. Birds circle water.
- 04
Transpiration bags
Tie a clear plastic bag over a leafy, non-toxic branch in sun. Collects up to a cup a day.
- 05
Collect dew
Drag cloth rags through grass at dawn and wring them out.
- 06
Dig a seep
On the outside bend of a dry riverbed, dig until damp sand fills with water.
