One-Year Food Storage Without a Fridge
Plan and protect dry staples without assuming every food or packaging method guarantees decades of shelf life.
This is for educational purposes only. Not professional medical, electrical, or safety advice.
Warning
Packaging does not rescue damp or contaminated food. Shelf life depends on the specific food, packaging and storage; there is no universal 20-year guarantee.
- 01
Calculate needs
Build a meal plan using actual package calories and household needs, which vary by age, activity and health. Include safe water, cooking fuel, fats, protein and ready-to-eat foods; grains and beans alone are not a complete plan.
- 02
Use food-appropriate packaging
Keep original packaging or use a validated extension method for the specific dry staple. Oxygen absorbers are not a universal solution: do not use reduced-oxygen packaging for damp or unsuitable food. Follow food-specific guidance and absorber manufacturers' capacity instructions, not one dose for every bag.
- 03
Bucket and label
Place sealed bags in buckets, label contents and date.
- 04
Store cool and dark
Below 70°F, off concrete floors. Rotate what you eat.
