Forage 10 Safe, Common Wild Edibles
Dandelion, cattail, clover, plantain and other easy-to-identify plants found nearly everywhere.
This is for educational purposes only. Not professional medical, electrical, or safety advice.
Warning
Many deadly plants look like edible ones (e.g. water hemlock vs. wild carrot). Learn from a local expert and guidebook.
- 01
Dandelion
Entire plant is edible. Young leaves raw, roots roasted as coffee, flowers fried.
- 02
Cattail
Found in wetlands. Young shoots, pollen (flour), and starchy rhizomes. Avoid polluted water.
- 03
Clover & plantain
Clover flowers and leaves, cooked. Broadleaf plantain leaves are edible and soothe stings when chewed.
- 04
Acorns
High-calorie. Shell, crush and soak in changes of water until no longer bitter (removes tannins), then dry into flour.
- 05
Berries you know
Blackberries, raspberries, mulberries and blueberries have no deadly look-alikes when ID'd correctly.
- 06
Others
Lamb's quarters, purslane, wood sorrel, wild onion (must smell like onion), pine needle tea (vitamin C—avoid yew and ponderosa if pregnant).
- 07
The golden rule
If you're not 100% sure, don't eat it. Never eat wild mushrooms without expert identification.
