Tornado Safety: Watch vs Warning
Know what the alerts mean, pick your safe spot ahead of time, and never ride one out in a mobile home or car.

Warning
Don't wait to see the funnel. Many tornadoes are hidden by rain or darkness.
- 01
Watch vs Warning
A WATCH means conditions are right — review plans and stay alert. A WARNING means a tornado is spotted or on radar — take shelter immediately.
- 02
Pick your safe place now
Best: a storm shelter, safe room or basement. Otherwise, a small interior room on the lowest floor with no windows — closet, bathroom, hallway.
- 03
Protect your head
Crouch low, cover your head and neck with your arms. Helmets, blankets and a mattress help against flying debris, which causes most injuries.
- 04
Leave mobile homes
Mobile and manufactured homes are not safe even if tied down. Go to a sturdy building or shelter before the storm arrives.
- 05
Caught in a car
Don't hide under an overpass. Drive to a sturdy building if possible. If not, stay buckled with your head below the windows, or get into a ditch lower than the road and cover your head.
